Is your heat pump running OK?

All guidesHow do I know if my Cosy heat pump is running OK?
Look at a week, not a day. A healthy heat pump keeps the rooms at the temperature you set, runs in long steady stretches, and gives out several times more heat than the electricity it uses. Judge all three against the weather and your own past weeks.

If the rooms reach the temperature you set, nothing is wrong. A heat pump sends cooler water round the radiators than a boiler, for longer, because that keeps it efficient.

Check where the room sensor sits, that the schedule starts warming early enough, whether the flow settings were lowered, that the radiator valves are open, and that both units have power.

COP (coefficient of performance) is heat out divided by electricity in. A COP of 3 means 3 kWh of heat for every 1 kWh of electricity you pay for. It changes with the weather, so compare weeks with similar temperatures.
Read the guideWhy does my COP drop when it's cold outside?
The colder the air, the harder the heat pump works to collect heat from it, and the hotter it has to make the radiators. So COP falls on cold days and rises on mild ones. That's normal. The fair test is to compare days with similar outdoor temperatures.
Read the guideWhat do input and output mean?
Input is the electricity the heat pump uses, which is what you pay for. Output is the heat it delivers to your radiators and hot water. Both are in kWh, and output divided by input is the COP.
Read the guideWhy is hot water less efficient than heating?
The tank needs much hotter water than the radiators, and the hotter a heat pump goes the lower its COP. For hot water, heating it in a cheap Cosy period matters more than efficiency.
Read the guideIs it normal for it to run all day in cold weather?
Yes. A heat pump works best low and steady, so long runs at low power usually cost less than short bursts. Switching on and off every few minutes, called short-cycling, is the pattern worth looking into.
Read the guideShould I turn it off at night?
Usually not off. A drop of a degree or two is fine, but a big drop means it has to run hot and hard to catch up, often at a pricier time. On Cosy Octopus, warming a little more in the cheap periods and coasting through the 4pm to 7pm peak usually saves more.
Read the guideWhy does it stop and steam in cold, damp weather?
It's defrosting. In damp weather just above freezing, ice builds up on the outdoor unit and the heat pump briefly melts it off. A few minutes of steam and a small dip in efficiency is normal.
Read the guideWhat is flow temperature?
How hot the water going to your radiators is. The lower it can be while rooms stay warm, the better the COP. On weather compensation there's a minimum for mild weather and a maximum for the cold; on fixed flow there's one setting.
Read the guideWhen are the cheap Cosy Octopus rates?
Three cheap Cosy periods every day: 04:00–07:00, 13:00–16:00 and 22:00–midnight, with a peak from 16:00–19:00. The rest of the day is the day rate. Exact prices depend on your region.
